Therapy supports speech, but also gestures, pictures and other ways to communicate.
Speech and language therapists help children understand language, express their needs and interact with others. For some children the goal is spoken language; for others it may include pictures, signs or communication devices.
Therapy works best when the skills are practised at home. Ask your therapist for simple activities you can fit into mealtimes, play and bedtime routines.
Many Malaysian children grow up with more than one language. Bilingual exposure does not cause autism or delay, so speak to your therapist about using the languages that your family uses every day.
