Mainstream or Special Class? How to Decide

There is no single right answer. Here are the questions that help families decide.

Choosing a school setting is one of the hardest decisions for parents. Some autistic children thrive in mainstream classes with support, while others learn better in smaller, specialised settings.

Consider your child's communication ability, comfort with noise and crowds, learning style and the school's willingness to adapt. Ask whether a teacher aide, visual aids or sensory breaks are available.

Remember that the decision can be reviewed. Many families start in one setting and move to another as their child grows. Keep communicating with teachers and track what is working.
